PROJECT PURPOSE
Over the years an accumulation of sludge and sandy silt has occurred in the lagoon until it has reached a point where the surface of the accumulation is now visible when the water surface of the lagoon cell is lower than completely full. The sludge is generated by solids from the sewer collection system, and the sandy silt is a result of rainfall generated infiltration and inflow carrying soil into the Town?s sewerlines from the naturally sandy soil in the community.
EVIDENCE
The Town contacted Lagoon Pumping and Dredging, Inc. of Columbus, NE to survey the site and determine the extent of the problem. A boat was dispatched, and measurements of sludge thickness and overall lagoon depth were made at various locations throughout the cell. It was discovered that the accumulated biosolids is located principally in the southern one-third of the cell with the remainder of the cell relatively clear of any accumulation. There is concern that if left unabated this biosolids accumulation will plug the sewerline outlet in the lagoon cell causing a backup and overflow. In an effort to avoid this potential problem, the Town intends to hire a dredging company to mix the biosolids
