PROJECT PURPOSE

The Frontier has a mission to produce fearless, journalism with impact. Investigative journalism requires a great deal of time, resources, passion and dedication to information accuracy and public service. Many newsrooms can no longer afford this deep-dive reporting. The need for explanatory journalism, investigative journalism, and watchdog reporting has never been greater. Our team of Oklahoma journalists has decades of combined experience, providing our newsroom with the institutional knowledge necessary to do difficult investigative journalism. Our reporting has contributed to the passage of new laws, reversals of harmful policies and practices, and accountability for leaders at local, state, and national levels. It has led to indictments, resignations, and in some cases, incarceration. The Frontier publishes stories in both a narrative and investigative voice to educate Oklahomans so they understand the issues in their communities and state.

POPULATION DESCRIPTION

The Frontier serves the general population of Oklahoma. In 2021 we average 3 million unique readers on our website per month. Many of our supporters were impacted by COVID-19. Reader donations decreased and foundation and individual supporters decreased their giving. As a result we were not able to hire new budgeted reporters. At the start of COVID-19, The Frontier was the first in Tulsa County to report infection rates. We also kept a list of individuals who had passed away due to the pandemic. These were in addition to our usual investigative reporting stories published.

PERFORMANCE MEASURING

We determine progress throughout the year by keeping ongoing track of our work and impact by comparing it to our goals. We track number of monthly unduplicated readers on our website, number of stories published per month, and how many times each story was republished. We track this data on an ongoing basis.
