PROJECT PURPOSE

To build a Health and Safety Center for rural residents located in the Rock community. Currently, the department lacks physical space equipped for partners to provide: Immunization clinics Illness testing centers Preventive disease education Eldercare and caregiver education Mental health services Physical education classes The growing health issues created by the pandemic have increased emergency medical responses by 43% since January 2020. Health and safety needs have increased medical responses, and the fire department lacks a facility to provide prevention services to improve the health of rural residents and mitigate. Rock Fire Department (RFD) is a non-profit, volunteer fire department located in southern Osage County, responding to fire and medical emergencies within a 72 square mile area. RFD provides mutual aid to Black Dog, Country Corner, Sand Springs, and Green Country Fire departments. Volunteer firefighters and responders are on-call twenty-four hours, seven days a week to serve the 2,000 plus rural community members and year-round influx of activity-based visitors generated through Girl and Boy Scout camps, bicyclist clubs, equine trail riders, motor cross participants, and people traveling to Skiatook lake. The Rock community has elders who continue to experience social isolation and lack of healthy connections resulting from the pandemic. A Health and Safety Center in the Rock community will provide a safe space for elders to participate in health prevention and education. The Osage County Health Department, Red Cross, FEMA, Osage Nation Fire Department, Osage County Sheriff's office, and Farm Bureau partners have a physical space to administer activities for biological, social, emotional, and mental health for aging residents and all community members.

POPULATION DESCRIPTION

The Rock community has rural aging community members who continue to experience social isolation, physical struggles, and mental health needs directly resulting from the pandemic. Rock Fire Department responders are frequently in homes where there are positive COVID cases. To assist with decreasing responses, RFD would like to provide members with more equitable health prevention resources for aging and vulnerable community members. A Health and Safety Center in the Rock community will provide a safe space for elders to participate in health prevention, education, seek social-emotional and behavioral supports needed. The center's health and safety activities will include a holistic approach to community well-being that meets aging residents' biological, social, emotional, and mental health and all rural community members.
