PROJECT PURPOSE

This project will pair with a soon to be established Traffic Management Center by installing CCTV cameras at three intersections while initiating new detection technologies at the same three intersections as well as three other intersections. The project will touch 24th Avenue East at Alameda Street, 24th Avenue NW at Conference Drive, 24th Avenue NW at Tecumseh Road, Lindsey Street at 24th Avenue SE, Boyd Street at Elm Avenue, and Alameda Street at Triad Village Drive.

EVIDENCE

Reliable detection at a signalized intersection is paramount to keep traffic moving smoothly and to reduce driver frustration with the system.

POPULATION DESCRIPTION

During the pandemic, the one place most people felt safe was when they are alone in their car. Driving around should be as frustration free as possible. It is the goal of this project to evaluate three detection technologies side by side by side so we can determine the best solution for our citizens. The majority of revenues coming into the City of Norman are sales tax based. During the pandemic these have either been flat or below average. This has created a situation where new projects such as this one have been difficult to fund locally.

PERFORMANCE MEASURING

The reliability of the new detection technologies should be readily apparent and provide us with a clear path forward. The CCTV cameras will be of significant benefit to accompany one of the new detection technologies being tested and will be an asset in our soon to be Traffic Management Center.
