PROJECT PURPOSE

Create true Alternatives to Detention to reduce congregate situations that may result in increased exposure to COVID.

EVIDENCE

In many cases, Detention is used because beds are currently available due to reductions in juvenile crime. The juvenile justice system has no need to seriously consider alternatives to detention even though that might be what is best for the youth. This would also reduce exposure to COVID-19 and its variants. Fewer youth in congregate care will result in fewer exposures.

POPULATION DESCRIPTION

Statewide - Alternatives to Detention, if implemented correctly will save detention beds for those youth that it is critical for safety and security. If congregate care is not necessary, it shouldn't be utilized during epidemics such as COVID-19. Minimizing exposure will help protect youth and detention staff.

PERFORMANCE MEASURING

Collection of data will be through the Juvenile On-line tracking system. Decrease congregate populations and provide better outcomes and reduce COVID-19 exposure for youth and facility staff
