PROJECT PURPOSE

We wish to train teachers in the science of reading. We wish to train teachers to teach reading for all children but specifically reading skills to help teacher teach phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and reading comprehension. This also includes spelling and writing. Teachers lack the skills necessary to teach reading, and to teach at a high level for students who missed 18 months of learning due to a pandemic and/ have reading disabilities. We instruct teachers how to identify learning differences and teach those missing skills

EVIDENCE

The curricula that will be taught has been researched to include efficacy and teaching models. Research has been peer reviewed and published in The Annals of Dyslexia V52, 2002. Additionally teaching reading instruction utilizing the science of reading is well researched.

POPULATION DESCRIPTION

Education and Children are quite frankly two of our most vulnerable populations that have been highly and disproportionately impacted by Covid-19 and the ongoing pandemic. High numbers of teachers are emergency certified/not trained and reading scores continue to drop due to lack of instruction time, lack of teach knowledge, and ineffective teaching strategies. This program will train teachers and enroll teachers using a rubric that allows schools of low-income (Title I), low reading scores, and in rural areas with access to few resources highest priority.

PERFORMANCE MEASURING

We will track reading scores are schools and in classrooms of teachers trained and compare beginning of year scores with end of year scores. Additionally we will survey all teachers to determine if their knowledge of reading instruction has been increased and improved through class training.
