PROJECT PURPOSE

Child abuse prevention through parenting skill development for new, young and at-risk fathers. This program would be a three part program including Boot Camp for New Dads, "a unique father-to-father, community-based workshop that inspires and equips men of all economic levels, ages, and cultures to become confidently engaged with their infants, support their mates, and personally navigate their transformation into dads"; 24/7 Dad, "a unique set of programs designed to equip fathers with the self-awareness, compassion, and sense of responsibility that every good parent needs. It focuses on building the man first and the father second"; and Caring Dads, "combines elements of parenting, fathering, and child protection practice to address the needs of maltreating fathers".

EVIDENCE

Already utilized programs support this project, including Boot Camp for New Dads, 24/7 Dads, and Caring Dads.

POPULATION DESCRIPTION

This project would provide focus on fathers, which in regard to community focused- collaborations and programs, have been disproportionately left out and forgotten about in regard to providing parenting and support for being a father. In addition, fathers are more likely to struggle with attending groups and intervention activities as a result of being the primary resource provider for their families.

PERFORMANCE MEASURING

All fathers will complete a semi-structured interview and the following measures at pre- and post-treatment: parenting skills assessment, hope assessment, the Child Abuse Potential Inventory (CAP), Adult-Adolescent Parenting Inventory (AAPI-2), and the Parenting Stress Index and Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI/PSI-SF). Results will look at the father?s level of parenting skills, hope for improvement, healthy relationships, self-perception and confidence as a father, hostility, denigration, and rejection of their child and their level of angry arousal to child and family situations over the course of intervention.
