PROJECT PURPOSE
This program would allow the installation of Pierce Manufacturing?s Idle Reduction Technology (IRT) on the City?s fleet of 19 fire apparatuses and large support units. This unit is a lithium-ion battery pack with an onboard control system and charger. This system allows the fire apparatus to have a functioning electrical system for things like emergency lighting, work lights, and any other electrical need while on the scene, while not having to run the large main diesel engine. Per National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1901, the electrical system must supply a minimum of 150amp loads for one (1) hour with critical on-scene loads and operational HVAC climate controls. After which time, the Peirce Command Zone (PCZ) system would restart the main engine to recharge the batteries. Once these batteries were back to full capacity, the PCZ would again shut the main engine off and operate on battery power.
EVIDENCE
Using the referenced calculators and a decrease in gallons of fuel per hour will give evidentiary validation that this project is a positive for air quality, lower fuel consumption, and increase the hours a unit can be on scene before needing to refuel.
POPULATION DESCRIPTION
All citizens in and around the City of Norman were affected by the pandemic, whether it be by a school, church, or their employer closing. The availabilities of basic amenities at times has been a concern, especially for the City?s elderly citizens, low-income households, and those without transportation. The City of Norman Fire Department supports and services all these areas as well as supports nearby communities in times of crisis.
PERFORMANCE MEASURING
The efficiency of this project can be measured by total fuel consumption by mileage, fuel consumption by hours operated, total carbon footprint reduction as calculated using the North Carolina State University or the Environmental Protection Agency?s carbon footprint calculator for each unit an IRT system is installed on, calculated per calendar year.
