PROJECT PURPOSE
This project will allow us to treat water to a level of arsenic established by the EPA standards; the purpose of this treatment will be to meet the arsenic limit of 10 ug/l required by the "Safe Drinking Water Standards". The Town of Hinton is currently under an ODEQ consent order for exceeding the limits set forth by the EPA.
EVIDENCE
Based on previous pilot studies, the Town anticipates than an arsenic adsorption system with a granular ferric oxide media will provide a feasible solution. Adsorption is a process where contaminants chemically adsorb to filter media. Many media have been developed to reduce a multitude of contaminants such as arsenic, but the ferric oxide media has been shown by independent academic and third-party testing to be particularly cost effective for water supplies similar to the Town of Hinton?s wellfield. This has also held true when compared to conventional technologies such as oxidation/filtration, membranes, and ion exchange. Further, this technology has been successfully implemented for arsenic remediation with a nearby community in Oklahoma, giving the Town local resources for operation and troubleshooting input.
POPULATION DESCRIPTION
Due to the pandemic, the Town of Hinton has experienced a significant loss of revenue which has led to the Town having to reassess project priorities.
PERFORMANCE MEASURING
? Test the raw and treated water upon start up. ? Test the water after every 25,000 gallons treated for 10 samples. This include a total of 250,000 gallons treated.
