PROJECT PURPOSE

Expand the City of Norman public transportation fleet by 2 fixed-route CNG transit buses in order to provide more service to the community. Priority 2 and 3 of the Go Norman Transit Plan, passed unanimously by City Council on June 22, 2021, are to upgrade 2, hour long routes from 60-minute to 30-minute frequency. This would require 2 additional buses, 1 per route, and would improve the wait time for passengers at a bus stop by 50% on these routes.

EVIDENCE

This is the second and third priority of the Go Norman Transit Plan, passed unanimously by Council on June 22, 2021. As service frequencies improve individuals are more likely to ride public transportation. This is due to not having to wait as long for another bus to come by your stop if you miss your intended one. In addition, as frequencies improve it takes some of work off of the passenger to navigate a schedule since they know they do not have to wait as long for the next bus.

POPULATION DESCRIPTION

The pandemic has put additional hardships on individuals in our community as they continue to try and make ends meet in the face of job and health uncertainty. For some, the pandemic has pushed individuals to rely more on personal vehicles to socials distance and to meet their needs rather than public transportation. Owning a personal vehicle can be expensive and an additional burden on individuals and families. Public transportation can help to alleviate some of the financial pressure that some individuals and families in our community are facing.

PERFORMANCE MEASURING

Ridership for the City transit routes that realize the improved frequency will continue to be collected before and after the vehicles awarded with this project are placed in service. City staff will ensure that required programmatic data is collected and reported as appropriate.
