PROJECT PURPOSE
Replace 2 fixed-route transit buses in the City of Norman public transportation fleet that have exceeded their useful life with 2 new CNG buses. The City of Norman took over the public transit system of the University of Oklahoma just over 2 years ago and since then has been working tirelessly to realize funding and replace the aging assets that were inherited. The major goals of the is project to replace these vehicles is to improve air quality and safety while also continuing to meet transportation needs in our community, often for the most vulnerable populations. In addition, with newer vehicles the City is expecting a decrease in operating/maintenance costs.
EVIDENCE
As newer vehicles are purchased and older vehicles are retired, it can be expected that the new vehicle will have less maintenance costs due to having new parts. In addition, newer vehicles can be expected to expel less emissions as technology improves and regulation thresholds increase. Lastly, this will improve system reliability for those using transit as there will be less maintenance road calls and towing.
POPULATION DESCRIPTION
The pandemic has put additional hardships on individuals in our community as they continue to try and make ends meet in the face of job and health uncertainty. For some, the pandemic has pushed individuals to rely more on personal vehicles to socials distance and to meet their needs rather than public transportation. Owning a personal vehicle can be expensive and an additional burden on individuals and families. Public transportation can help to alleviate some of the financial pressure that some individuals and families in our community are facing.
PERFORMANCE MEASURING
Maintenance costs (parts, towing, mechanic time, etc.) for the City transit routes will continue to be collected before and after the vehicles awarded with this project are placed in service. City staff will ensure that required programmatic data is collected and reported as appropriate.
