PROJECT PURPOSE
The City of McAlester proposes to replace a 14 inch water line running along Main Street / US Business Highway 69 to ensure proper fire protection to critical areas of town. These areas include county, state, and tribal organizations as well as residential, commercial, and historic business districts.
EVIDENCE
The City of McAlester, McAlester Fire Department, and engineers at Infrastructure Solutions, LLC, have conducted flow tests and hydraulic studies that have determined major blockage exists in a primary transmission line and prevent proper fire protection and water pressures to key areas of the community.
POPULATION DESCRIPTION
The City of McAlester, like so many across Oklahoma, saw major disruptions in small businesses during 2020 and 2021 as a result of measures taken to combat the effects of the Coronavirus Pandemic. The businesses affected by this water line replacement project include many restaurants and retail establishments that affected revenues of both private and public entities. Further, many residents were impacted by the closures of several manufacturing and retail employers in McAlester.
PERFORMANCE MEASURING
The City of McAlester will produce data comparing existing water pressures along the line and at fire hydrants with new pressures after construction is completed. Those pressures will see a dramatic improvement and meet minimum standards for fire protection and clean water distribution.
