PROJECT PURPOSE
The City of Miami is proposing funding for $1,698,459.00 to offset the increase to utility users by the city utility?s department due to the Power Adjustment Cost (PCAx) by Grand River Dam Authority for the February 2021 severe winter weather event, DR 4587. The increase will be adjusted to utility users that live within the city and in the county. The proposed project will produce increased assistance to all utility users affected during the February 2021 Severe Winter Storm event. Due to this event, citizens within the community were forced to endure severe cold weather which resulted in an increase in utility usage. This event not only affected citizens within Miami but those living in the county that have city services. Many were forced to stay home, indoors due to school and business closings. Lost wages and continuing COVID restrictions affected public health and safety concerns. With the assistance of $1,698,459 ARPA funding to help offset the PCAx cost increase, the benefit to citizens having the ability to meet utility payments will therefore aid with increased revenue. The benevolence offered by this opportunity to help the community will far exceed the financial benefits.
EVIDENCE
The City of Miami Public Utility Authority has over 13,000 citizens and due to the severe weather events of February 2021 many users experienced lost wages due to school and business closings. Every utility user will feel the effects of the GRDA PCAx charge that we must pass on to our customers.
