PROJECT PURPOSE

The purpose of this project is to increase outdoor activity options for our school district and community. The project would renovate the existing outdoor facility which includes the track and field. The COVID-19 pandemic created more need for outdoor recreation for students and community patrons. Alva Public Schools has the only outdoor facility within the community where patrons have a place to walk/run during the day and evenings. The renovation of this facility would provide opportunities for increased lighting and renovation of the track which increases outdoor options for exercise within our community Additionally, the project will provide opportunities to host events that would impact economic development for the school and community.

EVIDENCE

During the strategic planning process, surveys and community forums were used to create the goals and objectives of the plan. In goal area four, resources, the objective for the district is to improve facilities. The performance measure set by our stakeholders is to update/renovate three public venues by 2024. Evidence of this process will be provided in the supporting documentation of the application.

POPULATION DESCRIPTION

The benefit to the community will be to provide an outdoor exercise area that is ADA compliant for students and community members. The vulnerable populations such as senior citizens were unable to use the walking track inside our community wellness center. In the current state of our track facility, this same population has a difficult time using the facility because of its lack of ADA compliance. The renovation of this facility will ensure that our elementary students are able to continue a yearly track meet provided by the Kiwanis organization.

PERFORMANCE MEASURING

This project will help meet the goal area of resources, objective one, improving facilities initiative set by Alva Public Schools through the most recent strategic plan. A performance measure included in the plan is to renovate a minimum of three public venues. Stakeholders that helped create this plan included, community personnel, students, teachers, university and career technical school representatives. The project's performance will be measured through the student participation in outdoor activities and public use of the facility.
