PROJECT PURPOSE

The Greenwood Community Development Corporation 501(c)(3) focuses on developing business incubator spaces, programming, revitalization of the buildings, and training. The GCDC is seeking the highest and best use of the approximately 60,000 s.f. of the potentially Class B space comprising the East and West Buildings of the Greenwood District, which houses more than 35 women and minority-led businesses. The Historic Greenwood District is one of the longest-standing business districts of Tulsa. It is understood that communities are more than the brick and mortar that comprise them. They are the collective history of their residents that support the local businesses that grow from aspirations to thriving enterprises coupled with the honest value handed down for generations. The restoration of the last remaining Greenwood Black Wall Street buildings is in dire need of emergency repair and upgrades.

EVIDENCE

The buildings are more than a century old. The elevators were installed in 1981. The cooling towers were installed in 1983. The electrical grid has been out of compliance since 1998. This is an emergency situation.

POPULATION DESCRIPTION

The Greenwood Commercial District has been neglected since 1998. The pandemic has greatly exposed the emergency work that must be done to preserve the area which will support the small businesses housed in the historic buildings.

PERFORMANCE MEASURING

The historic buildings and site have a plethora of emergency repairs including HVAC chillers, cooling towers, elevators, and electrical grid. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit the area by dining, shopping, enjoying leisure activities, exploring history, and even residing inside the historic Greenwood Commercial District. The historic commercial district needs economic support to address the emergency infrastructure problems that must be addressed before it causes harm to the public with life and safety issues.
