PROJECT PURPOSE

As our Senator McCortney was quoted as saying ?as rural Oklahoma goes, so goes Oklahoma.? And so it is with Holdenville, Oklahoma. Exemplifying the decaying and challenging needs of rural Oklahoma, this community of 5,559 (2019) situated in a county of 13,372 (2019) was disproportionately negatively impacted by COVID and the untoward effects of the pandemic. Our needs may not be greater than some of our sister communities, but they are certainly more significant than others regarding the disenfranchised demographics of our population. Our needs for which we request funding are varied and across the board as those needs relate to the provision of services by a government and the ability of that government to respond to those needs or maintain a system of providing and addressing the basic needs of the community. This in turn will insure healthier lifestyles as those relate to sanitation, clean drinking water, access to public health facilities and wellness models. Our Funding Requests Respectfully Submitted address unmet needs in Sanitation Sewer City Streets Emergency Management (Only) Drinking Water Source: Holdenville Lake Degrading City Hall which houses City Law Enforcement and City Government (circa: 1910)

POPULATION DESCRIPTION

Hughes County which acts as home to Holdenville, Oklahoma, has a population of 13,387. Of that population: 20.4% is Native American. Statistically 21.4% of the population lives below the poverty level. The poverty level of Holdenville, Oklahoma, (5,559) is 23.18%. The median household income is below the state average. This geographic area has a population classified as: 40.7-45.1 % obese and 17.8-22.5% diabetic. In simple language: we are poor, unwell with stagnant economic growth and few possibilities even PRIOR to Covid. The obvious is clear for this disenfranchised community. This isolated community became even more isolated with individuals and families sequestering from groups and minimizing public engagements. The already de-railed economy fell into a flat line. Government services which were already financially strapped fell into greater disarray ergo continued decay. Community members had no physical outlet other than a small poorly equipment park and the Holdenville Lake. The Lake serves as the only other recreational site and provides 80% of the drinking water for Hughes County. By 2021 The Holdenville Lake was experiencing more activity but was unable to accommodate those seeking outdoor healthier lifestyles secondary to infrastructure decay and abandoned household trash contaminating entry sites.
