PROJECT PURPOSE

Design and replacement of the Porter Avenue bridge NBI:05274. This is a Concrete Arch Deck structure built in 1937. This structure is currently load posted at 20 tons and carries an average ADT >6000 VPD. In conjunction to the bridge structure, Porter Avenue will need to be reconstructed to mitigate regular flooding through corridor that overtops roadway causing roadway closure.

EVIDENCE

Closure of bridge due to load rating or failure will result in major economic impact to City of Norman budget. Closure of roadway due to flooding is a public health hazard and causes delay in emergency response when route closed due to flooding.

POPULATION DESCRIPTION

This specific project will impact a large array of communities as the bridge structure is located on a major north south section line road connecting the City of Norman to communities such as Moore, OKC, Del City, and Midwest City. As this route is a major connection to other cities it provides community access to commerce, medical care, entertainment, and other goods and services throughout the City of Norman.

PERFORMANCE MEASURING

Data currently collected on annual or bi-annual basis as required by the FHWA to ensure bridge structure inventory and conditions are actively monitored. The proposed structure will maintain this routine inspection and record keeping process indefinitely.
