PROJECT PURPOSE

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections installed its first IT cabling and switches in the mid-1990s. With a few exceptions, this original infrastructure has remained in place and has not been modernized. This refresh will move the agency forward by three decades or better. It is also necessary as most of the old switches are well past the service life and the original cabling was installed in a manner not conducive to modern IT use. In many cases, the cabling is daisy-chained from building to building so that, if there is a problem in one building everything downstream is also affected.

EVIDENCE

The current cabling is not in compliance with any accepted code. The refresh will include BICSI certified installers and comply with the rules and regulations of that certification.

POPULATION DESCRIPTION

The agency has long needed to improve this infrastructure. Our employees work in the environment daily and struggle with the limitations the environment brings. In addition, the inmates and the public we serve are also underserved by this infrastructure. It is difficult to achieve the best technology in medical services, education, and programs while residing on the ancient infrastructure.

PERFORMANCE MEASURING

Each correctional facility will be provisioned as a stand-alone project. In all public facilities, we will measure success in stages of completion. In the total project, we will measure performance as each full facility is completed and comes online using the new infrastructure.
