PROJECT PURPOSE

This is a project to restore a no longer operable pipeline to deliver water from Tom Steed Lake to the Hackberry Flat Wildlife Management Area for wetland management.

EVIDENCE

The pipeline originally constructed in the late 1990's has failed due to corrosion, and is no longer capable of delivering water to the WMA. ODWC. We have consulted with engineers to determine feasibility of sliplining new pipe into the old pipeline to restore water transmission capabilities to the Hackberry Flat WMA.

POPULATION DESCRIPTION

While the Hackberry Flat WMA is utilized by people from the entire state of Oklahoma as well as non-residents from many other states, much of the use is for local communities, with an emphasis on education programs that target public schools from the surrounding counties. There is substantial economic benefit to surrounding communities, driven by visitor use and expenditures.

PERFORMANCE MEASURING

Once the pipeline is restored, water flow will be monitored. We use vehicle counters, on-site migratory bird monitoring and surveys, and annual game harvest and human dimensions surveys to evaluate wetland habitat and wildlife use, as well as visitor use.
