PROJECT PURPOSE
This project is the improvements of the intersections along Tecumseh Road at I-35, 24th Avenue NW and Flood Avenue. This will include new signalization and additional turn and traffic lanes to mitigate congestion. This roadway corridor has become very congested. During heavy travel times traffic becomes stopped from intersection to intersection and vehicles become trapped in the intersections impeding traffic. This roadway corridor serves the only route to the Norman Regional Health Hospital on Tecumseh Road from northwest Norman. The hospital is currently undergoing an expansion and will become the primary hospital serving Norman. Improving safety makes a community more livable for all ages. This project will mitigate congestion and make the roadway safer for all users. The improvements on Tecumseh Road will also provide opportunities for economic development. This is a major gateway into the University North Park area that has emerged as a major shopping district and still has further opportunity to expand closer Tecumseh Road. This roadway also serves the Sysco Food Distribution facility located approximately 3/4 of a mile to east of the intersection of Tecumseh Road and Flood Avenue. This Road way is also identified as a relief route for I-35 during collisions or congestion.

This project will aid in the access Norman Regional Healthplex and the associated medical offices which will become the main hospital resource in Norman in coming years. It will also decrease congestion in this corridor making it easier to access shopping, industry and I-35 for ease of access for all users. During the COVID-19 pandemic these all populations were negatively impacted by a loss of transportation alternatives. This project will increase these opportunities along this roadway.
