PROJECT PURPOSE
The purpose of this project is to provide an adequate storm sewer outfall for the east of downtown Oklahoma City and replace an existing multi arch superspan system, which drains a significant area of northwest Oklahoma City. From previous studies, the drainage system required is a double 84? reinforced concrete pipe system, approximately 2,100 feet in length is for the downtown outfall. The existing superspan structure was installed in the 1970?s, and the I-44 interstate constructed over portions of the system. The superspan structure has been modified with additional structural components, which are failing. A study has recommended relocating this structure outside of the Oklahoma Department of Transportation?s facility.
EVIDENCE
The Oklahoma City downtown areas have experienced several flood events since 2010 underscoring the long-term flooding problems exist. All the outfalls from downtown to the Oklahoma River have a 5-year capacity or less. A study of the downtown area was completed, and a project developed to provide adequate outfall for the east side of downtown. The superspan structure has been monitored, with a consultant evaluating the structural integrity of the structure and found the amount of deterioration has increased over the last 10 years. Relocation/replacement of the structure is needed to provide stability to the drainage and highway.
POPULATION DESCRIPTION
The project will provide a long-term solution for potential flooding in downtown Oklahoma City and the Deep Fork Basin. Businesses and homes in the downtown area have experienced structural flooding and an adequate outfall reduce the potential of flooding. The superspan structure will provide flooding protection from the many homes and businesses upstream, should a collapse of the structure occur.
PERFORMANCE MEASURING
The project will be managed by the City's Public Works Department, and all required data will be collected in our Construction Management System. The City's Planning and Finance Departments will collect required programmatic data.
